Wigan boss Martinez craves revenge for 9-1 horror mauling at Tottenham

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez wishes he could replay their 9-1 hammering against Tottenham but insists that result will have no bearing on the return fixture at the DW Stadium on Sunday.  [LNB] Back in November an Aaron Lennon-inspired Spurs blitzed the Latics with eight goals in the last 39 minutes as Jermain Defoe scored five.   [LNB]Wigan bounced back with a victory over Sunderland the following weekend but have won only once in the Barclays Premier League since then. [LNB] On target: Lennon inspired Spurs to a 9-1 win over Wigan earlier this season [LNB] But the notion of taking revenge on Harry Redknapp's side, who are currently having a poor run of form themselves, is not a feature of Wigan's pre-match preparations.  [LNB] 'If we could go back to White Hart Lane and replay that game I think then we could put it right but the importance of the points is so huge that you don't need any extra spice or motivation,' said Martinez.   [LNB]'The result we had at White Hart Lane was a very painful experience at the time but I was extremely proud of the way the players reacted and we are a stronger football club as a result.   [LNB] Five-star performance: Defoe was in top form when the two teams met at White Hart Lane [LNB]'Humiliation in football is when you don't find the answers and we had a great win at home to Sunderland.   [LNB]'You look at the best sportsmen in the world and the ones that have had the biggest disappointments and the way they reacted are the ones that make a difference.   [LNB]'You will never see a successful sportsman that has not overcome a big disappointment in their career.   [LNB]'Until you experience that you will never be as good as you can be because it is all about how you adapt and make decisions after that.   "So I don't see it as a negative note at all.'   [LNB] Emphatic! Wigan boss Roberto Martinez says November's result will have no bearing on this weekend's game [LNB]In the week following the White Hart Lane demolition Martinez watched 10 replays of the game just to see just where things went wrong. But since then the DVD has remained in the cupboard as the Latics boss insists he and his side have moved on and it is not a performance which still troubles him.   [LNB]'I watched it (the DVD) enough to be fair but it is not something I go back to,' he added. [LNB]'It is a game which, in many aspects, would be very difficult to explain certain things that happened.   [LNB]Wigan manager: Roberto Martinez [LNB]'I don't look back in the way that we need to put something right - it was a freak day in football when they scored eight goals in 40 minutes from 10 chances. It is very difficult to see that happening again.   [LNB]'This game is going to be more about what we are capable of rather than Spurs because they have an extremely talented squad.'[LNB]After the 9-1 defeat the Wigan squad clubbed together to pay for the tickets of all the fans who made the trip to London only to see their side humbled.   And with the club hovering just two points above the relegation zone they now want to repay the supporters in a different way.  [LNB] 'The players are determined going into this one but not because of anything that happened at White Hart Lane,' said Martinez.  [LNB]'They want to get out of the position we are in and get as many points as we can because we feel we have lost too many points this season which we didn't deserve to. [LNB]'Every result is extremely significant and we don't need any extra motivation to be as good as we can on Sunday.  The important issue is not playing a Spurs side but fighting for three very important points.'[LNB]Centre-back Titus Bramble is a major doubt with a hamstring injury which forced him out of the goalless draw at home to Bolton in midweek.
