Who's a more credible candidate: David Ginola or Al Murray?

David Ginola as Fifa president? It’s almost as ridiculous as Al Murray being an MP.

Or is it more ridiculous?

The same week the Pub Landlord announced he would be standing in the general election, the scarcely more credible candidate of former L’Oreal flogger Ginola put his hat in the ring for the Fifa presidential run.

But how do their credentials compare?

Backing

Murray is backed by the Free the UK Party, who may or may not actually exist.

Ginola is backed by the bookmakers Paddy Power and the ChangeFIFA campaign group, who definitely do.

Opponents

Ginola will face a controversial incumbent who divides opinion with his maverick style and ability to put his foot in it, as well as a challenger nobody’s really heard of.

Supporters

Ginola has the support of his former team-mates Warren Barton, Rob Lee, Keith Gillespie and Dragon’s Den’s Duncan Bannatyne.

Murray doesn’t even have the support of an actual pub landlord.

Ginola needs the backing of five member associations by January 29 – he currently has none. He also has to prove he has played an active role in football in at least two of the last five years.

Murray needs 10 sponsors and a £500 deposit.

Money

Murray has vowed that “the pound will be revalued at £1.10, so it will now be worth 10p more” meaning everyone will be better off.

Ginola is being paid £250,000 to stand, so he will be better off.

Knowledge

Murray admits he has no idea where South Thanet is.

Ginola admits he has no idea who any of the members of Fifa’s executive committee are.

Slogan

Team Ginola‘s slogan is: “Rebooting football.”

FKUP‘s slogan is: “Taking the country back from the people taking the country back from the people who took the country back.”

Conclusion

Well, we certainly don’t expect to see Murray introducing any of his common sense policies any time soon – much though we’d like to see him, dishevelled suit and all, shaking things up at the House of Commons.

And for Ginola, his biggest hurdle will be making it to the start line. And if he gets there, well, you never know…
