Wales 1 Russia 3: Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko inspire vital victory

Guus Hiddink used his north London connections to grab a vital victory as John Toshack experienced a familiar feeling in Cardiff. Andrey Arshavin and Roman Pavlyuchenko both made significant contributions as the Dutchman carried on where he left off with Chelsea. Hiddink signed off his tenure at Stamford Bridge with an FA Cup triumph and he was indebted to his strikers from Arsenal and Spurs respectively as the Russians set up a thrilling finish to Group Four with leaders Germany. Arshavin underlined his class by spotting Igor Shemshov's run as the hosts finally caved in under Russian pressure nine minutes before the interval. And although James Collins celebrated his £5m move to Aston Villa by flicking home an equaliser from Aaron Ramsey's corner early in the second-half, this game was to end as so many others have for Toshack during this campaign. Danny Gabbidon's foul on Alexander Kerzhakov on the edge of the area gave Sergei Ignashevich the chance to fire home a low free-kick to restore the Russians' lead twenty minutes from time. And then Pavlyuchenko capitalised in the dying seconds after a sloppy Collins pass gave the Spurs' forward the chance to boost his flagging confidence.
