Tottenham's Jermain Defoe to miss Manchester United clash after brother's death

Defoe, who has only recently recovered from a long-term injury, did not travel to Old Trafford for the game against the league leaders, his club said, after Jade Defoe, 26, died late Friday from serious head injuries.

"It is a private matter and we await details," a Tottenham spokesman said of the incident.

"We retain an open mind as to any motive and inquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of the incident," a police spokesman said.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Michael Dawson will also miss the clash. The Russian playmaker is suffering with the same back injury that prevented him from featuring in last weekend's match against Newcastle. The club's website however, confirms that no long-term damage has been done.

Meanwhile, scans have shown Dawson is suffering with a partially torn ankle ligament. The defender was brought off at White Hart Lane could be out for up to a month.
