Tottenham's Jermain Defoe has broken hand

Defoe suffered the injury during Saturday's 5-0 win over Burnley and he could also be doubtful for England when they play World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Belarus. Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, said: "He is struggling. Jermain dislocated two fingers against Burnley last Saturday and they couldn't get them back in. "But he has also fractured his hand. He spent all Saturday night in hospital and is struggling. Hopefully, he'll be OK for England but we'll have to wait and see." England have already qualified for the finals, but Defoe will be keen to continue to impress manager Fabio Capello, who names his squad on Sunday for the final Group Six qualifiers, on October 10 and 14, particularly as he has scored five goals in his last four internationals. The injury means that Peter Crouch is likely to start at Bolton for only the second time in the Premier League since joining for £9 million from Portsmouth in the summer. Crouch, though, scored a hat-trick against Preston in the Carling Cup last week and will welcome the chance to impress Capello, who left the stariker out of the last squad.
