Tottenham's Jermain Defoe and Alan Hutton on course for return

The Scot suffered a foot injury in November and had to undergo an operation. But he returned for Scotland as a late substitute in Holland last week and, last night, came through 90 minutes in the reserves' 3-0 win over Arsenal at Barnet's Underhill Stadium. Harry Redknapp, the Spurs manager, witnessed Hutton's comeback and he could also be boosted by the return, possibly against Newcastle a week on Sunday, of Jermain Defoe. Defoe returns to training on Tuesday and the Tottenham striker has pencilled in the visit of Newcastle for his return. And this will allow the former Portsmouth forward to be reunited with Robbie Keane. Keane arrived on deadline day following news that Defoe had broken a bone in his foot. The two have not played together since Defoe left for Portsmouth in 2008, but during their time at White Hart Lane together, they featured in 86 games together, scoring 42 goals. And Defoe is determined to prove that, despite the pair being similar in stature and style, they can be a hit again. "At Portsmouth I played with Milan Baros, he wasn't massive, he's not a target man but he had good movement and we caused a lot of problems," said Defoe. "For some reason people say we can't play together but when I sit down with Robbie, he just says it is people's opinions and when I signed for Spurs first time it was brilliant and I really enjoyed it. "Hopefully I can do it again, I can't wait to get back in there as the boys are playing really well. But the physios are calming me down as they know the bone has to heal in an injury like this."
