Tottenham's fivegoal hero Jermain Defoe sharpens up by watching YouTube

Defoe spent quite some time considering the magnitude of his achievements at White Hart Lane. Yet he put the five goals he scored in Tottenham's 9-1 thrashing of Wigan in perspective by admitting: "I don't think I've scored five even on my PlayStation.[LNB]He added: "I think I scored five in a youth team, years ago at West Ham. And I definitely scored four there against Aston Villa in the youth team."[LNB] Related ArticlesJermain Defoe still doesn't deserve an England startDefoe's five goal haul one for the record booksJermain Defoe fills his 'pinkish silver' bootsRedknapp relies on Croatian character for Wigan testSport on televisionDefoe has used technology to hone his already considerable talents, watching clips on YouTube of goalscoring greats such as Clive Allen, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole. [LNB]Defoe's first three goals came in seven minutes the second-fastest hat-trick in Premier League history and he became only the third player to score five in the competition as Wigan wilted. And the coaches of the Tottenham striker had plenty to do with his performance. [LNB]"Every day in training for about 20 minutes a few of the boys stay behind with Les Ferdinand and Clive Allen," Defoe revealed. "I watched some of Clive's goals the other day on YouTube and it's important to do that to learn. [LNB]"Clive got 49 goals in one season and that is unbelievable. He's still got it and can still finish now. It was harder playing up there on your own like he did. [LNB]"And to be mentioned in the same breath as Cole and Shearer is brilliant. You mention names like Andy Cole, I have his video at home. Same with Alan Shearer. I still go on YouTube and watch their goals. [LNB]"I got the hat-trick quite quickly. It was crazy. But I told myself to keep going and not to settle for three. I've spoken to all the great strikers over the years, like Les Ferdinand and Ian Wright. [LNB]"Wrighty tells me that no matter how many you score, always try to get another right until the final whistle. I've got that mentality now to try to get more. I felt full of energy and prepared right. I've always said that if you prepare right then you give yourself the best opportunity to do well."[LNB]Defoe now has three ambitions for the season: to finish as top scorer and win the Premier League's golden boot, to go to the World Cup finals with England and to take Spurs into next year's Champions League. [LNB]"I'd like the golden boot, it would be my first," he said. "I'd like to finish fourth to be honest, it would be fantastic for the club. But that is the pressure you want as a professional. All the best athletes and players over the years, they thrive on that pressure. [LNB]"You go into games and know you have to perform. There are no excuses. You have to prepare right and live right. When you are confident you can't wait for the next game."[LNB]Spurs are fourth, behind Arsenal only on goal difference, and Defoe added: "I am always watching football and I always watch Champions League games. It's another competition and you're playing against the best. I'd be playing against the best defenders in the world. It's a great competition. I don't want to talk too much about it because it would put added pressure on the boys but we'll see what we can do. [LNB]"It's World Cup year and that is at the back of your mind, but it's important to focus on your club, keep your head down and give yourself the best opportunity to get on the plane. That is all I can do. [LNB]"It was funny in the dressing room after the game against Wigan because the lads couldn't believe it. We know how good we are, we know we have a good team and a strong squad, but to score nine goals in a game is brilliant and doesn't happen often in the modern game."[LNB]Defoe found himself back in the good books, just weeks after angering his manager, Harry Redknapp, by being sent off at his former club, Portsmouth for stamping on Aaron Mokoena. The red card cost Defoe a three-match ban and Spurs lost two of those games. [LNB]"The manager said what he said. When I got sent off I knew what I had done straight away and it was out of character. I can't remember the last time I was booked. During the games I was out I came to the matches at home but didn't go to the Arsenal game in case I got stick being in the crowd but it was important to come back like this because I owed something to the team. It was stupid and I shouldn't have got sent off. [LNB]"I was lucky because I only missed two weeks. It was out of character and when that happens it is not a big issue."[LNB]Jonathan Woodgate, Defoe's team-mate, was not surprised by the striker's success. "JD can do anything he wants to do," the defender said. "Fabio Capello seems to have a lot of faith in him and he's been outstanding and he can make a massive impact on the World Cup." [LNB]
