Tottenham vow not to risk future in bid for buckets of Champions League cash

Tottenham have warned they will not risk the club's future by chasing European riches ahead of their Champions League bow.[LNB] Harry Redknapp's side kick off their attempts to progress from Group A when they face Werder Bremen on Tuesday night. [LNB] Raring to go: Peter Crouch chases the ball during Tottenham's training session[LNB]They broke the supposed Big Four's stranglehold when they dislodged Liverpool to finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League last season.[LNB]By qualifying for the group stages, they are guaranteed to boost their bank balance - but chairman David Levy has warned that they will not go overboard in their bid to become a force on the continent. [LNB]Planning: Daniel Levy[LNB]Leeds famously reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2001 but later imploded because of their drastic over-spending. [LNB]They are still recovering almost 10 years later. Levy said: 'We deserve to be in the Champions League. [LNB]Our history dictates that but it has taken us a long time to get back. 'I think it's a huge achievement for Harry, all his coaching staff and players and the fans as well. It's something special. [LNB] 'I think we all want to stay there but we all have to be realistic. There are only four places in England and there are seven or eight clubs competing.[LNB] 'There are probably two clubs you could say are guaranteed to be in that top four. You then have two places for six clubs. The odds are stacked against you. [LNB] 'But what we won't do is jeopardise the club to challenge to be one of those two. You can't run the club on the basis of being in the Champions League.' [LNB] Levy handed Redknapp the funds to bring in Rafael van der Vaart, Sandro, William Gallas and Stipe Pletikosa this summer but he has also warned that they will not break the bank to lure star names.
