Tottenham v Young Boys: Preview and key battles

25 August 2010 10:34
Tottenham host Swiss side Young Boys in the second leg of their Champions League play-off, looking to overturn a 3-2 first leg defeat to reach the group stage of the competition for the first time.

Last Tuesday in Bern Spurs were left stunned as their less illustrious opponents burst into a three-goal lead inside half an hour. After struggling to adjust to the artificial pitch, Harry Redknapp's men eventually fought back with goals from Sebastien Bassong and Roman Pavlyuchenko reducing the deficit to just one.

After travelling to Stoke on Saturday with a much depleted side, Tottenham welcome back four players for tonight's must-win clash. Pavlyuchenko, Giovani Dos Santos, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane are all back in contention after missing the last game, although Croatian playmaker Luka Modric remains sidelined with a groin injury.

Modric joins an injury list which already includes long-term absentees David Bentley, Jamie O’Hara and Jonathan Woodgate.

Visitors Young Boys have no new injury worries ahead of their visit to White Hart Lane, with only defenders Emiliano Dudar and Hassan Lingani set to miss out. Both players didn't feature in last week's first leg in Switzerland.

Key Battles

Gareth Bale v Scott Sutter

Young Boy's right-back Sutter will fulfil a lifelong dream when he steps out onto the pitch at White Hart Lane this evening. The Enfield-born Spurs fan will come up against in-form Gareth Bale, who scored twice to seal three points for his side at Stoke on Saturday. Bale was forced to play left-back for much of last week's first-leg but tonight his pace and tricker on the wing could prove too much for Sutter.

Michael Dawson v David Degen

Dawson struggled on the plastic pitch last week but will be back on home turf tonight as he faces up to the lively Degen. The Swiss star impressed in the first leg with his pace and direct approach, catching out the Spurs defence on a number of occasions. England man Dawson needs a big performance at the heart of the back four this evening.

Jermain Defoe v Francois Affolter

In what could well be his last performance before undergoing a small groin operation, Defoe will be hoping to stop his own mini goal drought by firing Spurs to the Champions League proper. In his way stands Swiss youngster Affolter, a regular starter for Young Boys despite being just 19-years-old. He coped well with the Tottenham attack last week, although with the home side needing to score, the pressure will really be on tonight.
