Tottenham v Birmingham preview

28 August 2009 10:39
Table-topping Tottenham put their 100 per cent record on the line against Birmingham this weekend. Harry Redknapp's side lead the way three games into the new season after getting off to the perfect start. They will be hoping that run continues on Saturday against a Birmingham side still reacquainting themselves with the top-flight. The omens look good for Spurs, with their key men boasting impressive track records against the Blues. Jermain Defoe, who already has four goals to his name this term, has scored four times in his last six meetings with the men from the Midlands, while Robbie Keane has notched six times in his last seven starts against Alex McLeish's side. While the signs appear positive for the hosts, their inability to keep a clean sheet in their last five Premier League outings will have caused some concern. Birmingham have made a steady start to life back in the big time, with four points taken from their last two fixtures. They have been short on entertainment value so far, with only two goals scored in the three games they have been involved in, but that will not overly concern McLeish. The Scottish coach will be more worried about the fact the Blues have won just once in their last 14 top-flight visits to the capital - although that success did come at White Hart Lane. History dictates that Saturday's contest should be an open affair, with only one of the last nine meetings between these two sides having ended all square - so expect a result one way or another. Changes unlikelyRedknapp is likely to stick with a winning formula as Tottenham go in search of a fourth consecutive success. That means Carlo Cudicini will continue between the sticks, with Heurelho Gomes still nursing a thigh strain. With Jonathan Woodgate (groin) and Michael Dawson (Achilles) also sidelined, Ledley King and Sebastien Bassong will form the heart of Spurs' back four. Jermaine Jenas could come back into contention after a calf problem, while David Bentley and Peter Crouch are pushing for starting berths after impressing in the midweek Carling Cup victory at Doncaster. In contentionBirmingham left-back Gregory Vignal could return to action for the trip to White Hart Lane. Vignal has missed the last two games after suffering a hip problem against Portsmouth, but is close to full fitness. Blues boss Alex McLeish has to decide whether to include record signing Christian Benitez in a Premier League starting line-up for the first time after he impressed in the Carling Cup win at Southampton - but fellow striker Cameron Jerome is still sidelined with an ankle injury. Possible starting XIsTottenham: Cudicini, Corluka, King, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Palacios, Huddlestone, Modric, Keane, Defoe. Birmingham: Hart, Carr, Johnson, Queudrue, Vignal, Larsson, Ferguson, Fahey, Bowyer, McFadden, Benitez.
