Tottenham sweat on Heurelho Gomes injury

And manager Harry Redknapp admitted, ahead of a scan that will show the extent of the South American's injury, that he may have to bring a new goalkeeper into the club before the end of the summer transfer deadline. That will reignite the link between Redknapp and David James, the Portsmouth goalkeeper who is said to be unsettled by the disarray at Portsmouth. Gomes fell awkwardly, and had to be replaced with Carlo Cudicini, in the 17th minute of a victory that saw Spurs move to the top of the Premier League. Redknapp said: 'He injured his thigh muscle and we will have to see how serious it is. We only have Carlo Cudicini and so if it serious we may have to have a look.' The manager will not have to worry about the rest of his side, though, after they claimed six points from their opening two games for only the second time in the Premier League and claim their best start to a season since 1965. Jermain Defoe scored his first hat-trick for five years and only the third of his career. Redknapp said: 'It was vintage Tottenham, it was a terrific exhibition of attacking football. The movement, the passing, the pace was very pleasing and we really took it out of them. Defoe scored twice for England, in Holland recently, and Redknapp added: 'We looked dangerous every time we went forward and Defoe looked almost unplayable. His form at the moment is absolutely electric and he looks as strong as I've ever seen him.' Redknapp refused to get carried away by Spurs' lofty position, saying: 'It's early days but it's nice to have a good start with six points. But we've got to keep going and we've got a tough game on Sunday at West Ham.' Even Hull manager Phil Brown had to marvel at the performance. He said: 'That's the best performance I have seen in the Premier League. "We have probably seen a team that will finish in the top four this season, no doubt. There was a gulf in terms of class, performance and quality.'
