Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp determined to make further signings

Although Tottenham appear a sharper proposition up front than they have some time, boasting proven goalscorers in Crouch and Jermain Defoe, who combined so fruitfully at Portsmouth, as well as Robbie Keane, Redknapp still does not perceive the strength in depth in his squad that can enable them to challenge at the top of the Premier League. Redknapp has spoken in chastened terms of how difficult it is for Tottenham to compete with the lavish summer spending of Manchester City, which has threatened to thwart his ambitions of reclaiming a place in Europe, but it has not deterred him from trying. Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar, surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, remains on the radar at White Hart Lane as Redknapp seeks another frontline striker to back up Crouch and Defoe after the departure of Darren Bent. Tottenham are struggling in their pre-season campaign to find an effective means of squad rotation, as shown in the 2-0 defeat of their younger line-up in the friendly against South China in Hong Kong. Joe Cole, another Redknapp target, would assuredly inject some much-needed pace into the midfield, but the winger is still among Chelsea's most popular talents and it is likely to prove impossible for Tottenham to prise him from Stamford Bridge. The defence, worryingly, continues to have rather a makeshift look as first-choice centre-backs Michael Dawson, Jonathan Woodgate and Ledley King all struggle to overcome injury problems in time for the start of the season. Small wonder that Redknapp admits that he is actively "looking around". The incorporation of two promising youngsters Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton, formerly of Sheffield United, into the defence represented only a partial solution and Tottenham are increasingly being linked with a move for disenchanted Newcastle centre-half Sebastien Bassong to ease the pressure.
