Tottenham in talks with Eidur Gudjohnsen despite forward having West Ham medical

The irony for West Ham is that Benjani, who had thought he was joining them last week, has been lined up as a replacement at Ewood Park for Benni McCarthy, who moved to Upton Park in a £2.5 million deal. [LNB]At one stage West Ham were due to unveil Benjani on Monday, so that he could face his former club Portsmouth on Tuesday. However the deal was put on hold by West Ham as they stepped up their interest in Gudjohnsen. The danger now is that they lose both players. [LNB]Gudjohnsen underwent the first part of his medical on Tuesday after West Ham agreed a loan deal with his club Monaco, which involved covering his £50,000-a-week (after tax) wages until the end of the season. [LNB]The 31 year-old, however, then held talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy and negotiations were continuing on Wednesday. [LNB]Despite their failure to contact Gudjohnsen or his father, Arnor, on Wednesday West Ham had not given up hope on the deal even though their pursuit of the Icelander has put in jeopardy any hopes of signing Benjani. [LNB]Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was willing to agree a move last week but then, when West Ham failed to complete, it allowed Blackburn to step in with Sam Allardyce regarding the Zimbabwean as a replacement for McCarthy. Blackburn had also considered a move for Gudjohnsen but balked at his wages. [LNB]Last week both Spurs and West Ham attempted to sign Ruud van Nistelrooy with Sullivan going public with his willingness to pay the Dutch striker £100,000 a week. [LNB]However both clubs missed out as the 33 year-old joined Hamburg from Real Madrid instead. [LNB]Also on West Ham's list is Stoke City's James Beattie while there is also understood to have been an inquiry for Tottenham's Roman Pavlyuchenko. [LNB]
