Tottenham Hotspur v FC Twente: 'Gareth Bale can become world's best left-back'

29 September 2010 11:30
Tottenham's Wales international has played both on the left side of midfield and defence, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp believes the youngster will eventually settle at left-back.[LNB]But not any old full-back. Redknapp, ahead of tonight's visit of FC Twente, has claimed he has the ability to become the best in that position.[LNB]Redknapp said: 'Personally I feel his best position will eventually be left back.[LNB]'And in years to come, he will be the best left back anywhere. [LNB]'Ashley Cole is probably the best left back in world at moment but this boy will not be too far from that. [LNB]'He is a great left sided player and it suits me to play him wide left. Benoit is a top class left back so we have nice balance on that side. [LNB]'But Gareth can play left back. He was amazing at West Bromwich Albion recently. The amount of runs that he made and the times he got the ball across was unbelievable.[LNB]'And at Benfica, in a pre-season friendly, heproduced probably as good a performance as I have seen from a left back.[LNB]'There was once a left back called Terry Cooper. He was an average left winger butTerry went on to become one of the best left back in the world.[LNB]'But this boy is not an average left winger, he is a fantastic left winger but if he is going to be the best around, it will be at left back.'[LNB]Spurs face Twente in the first home group game of the Champions league having won just one of their last six games.[LNB]In the previous Champions league tie, in Germany, Spurs led 2-0 against Werder Bremen before being held to a 2-2 draw.[LNB]And Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone urged his team to take advantage of the unique atmosphere at White Hart Lane.[LNB]"I've played a few European games at the Lane and the atmosphere's always special, and it seems to be raised an extra 15-20 per cent for night games. "As we saw for the second leg of the Young Boys game, the atmosphere was very good and it got us through."[LNB]
