Tottenham Hotspur find sprinkling of Basel too bitter in Europa League quarter final

Stocker and Frei blasted the away team into a two goal lead, which in truth was nothing short of deserved, as Basel wasted chance after chance before finally taking the lead.

The pace of the Swiss team caused Spurs a constant headache and the sloppiness of the home defence did not help matters.

Adebayor breathed life into Spurs with their first goal just before the break and the transformation was complete after a deflected shot by Gulfi Sigurdsson wrong-footed Sommer in the Basel goal.

In truth Spurs will be grateful to be able to go into the second leg on level terms as this was a performance not in keeping with their normally high tempo pressure game, particularly under the lights at White Hart Lane.

Given they are yet to win on the road in Europe this year their fans will be thinking the race for 4th place in the Premiership is something more important to focus on?
