TOTTENHAM defender Ledley King admits he had doubts over whether he could continue to play with his long-term knee injury, but now feels back to his best and is confident he can help the club break into the top four. King produced another superb display as he helped Tottenham record an opening day 2-1 victory over Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Sunday. The England defender is still plagued by his knee injury, which means he cannot play more than one game a week and can barely train in the build-up to games. But King has managed to defy all the critics who said he was finished at the highest level and is confident he can play a large number of games to help Tottenham push for a Champions League spot this season. King said: “With the quality we have got, it is possible we can break into the top four. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and we realise how tough it is after the last few seasons. But I think not being in the Europa League this season could help us. Click here to find out more! You never know, we might win the league! We just have to see if we can keep winning. “I have not had match preparation or even training preparation but I have been working and doing my own thing. That stood me in good stead last season working off the pitch. That’s what I have been doing in the off-season and it seems to work. “It’s difficult mentally. Doubts start to creep in and you start to wonder whether you have got the sharpness and the stamina. “Players are obviously training every day having gone through a long pre-season as well. I have had to be strong and I have developed a new mental toughness and that seems to be working. We have reduced the training and are now trying to get as many games in as possible.” King will miss the Premier League game against Hull on Wednesday night, but is confident his new defensive partner Sebastien Bassong can marshal the back four in his absence. Bassong marked his debut for the north London club with the winning goal against Liverpool and King feels he has all the attributes needed to become a big star in the top flight. King added: “He's brilliant. We have only been on the training pitch two or three times - obviously that is because of me. We played 45 minutes together last week and he did really well and against Liverpool he was even better. “It’s a long time since I played on the right [of the centre-back pairing]. It may surprise people how difficult it is to switch but he is a natural left footer so it is the natural thing to do.”
