Modric fractured his right fibula against Birmingham at the end of August and was expected to be out for up to eight weeks, but is ahead of schedule and could return at Portsmouth on Oct 17. Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, said: "He's coming along okay, it's a matter of waiting for the bone to heal now. We have a break of two weeks coming up after the Bolton game at the weekend so that could be enough time to get him back playing after that international break." Redknapp is also monitoring the progress of centre-back Jonathan Woodgate, who has not played this season due to a groin injury and is looking to avoid further surgery. "He had the injection and feels a lot easier. We hope that does the trick rather than operating again," added Redknapp, who should discover today if Jermain Defoe can face Bolton. Defoe dislocated two fingers during the 5-0 win over Burnley on Saturday and his injury could open the way for Peter Crouch to make only his second start for Spurs. Medics at the game tried and failed to put the fingers back and so he went to hospital for treatment. He returns again and will discover if he will be able to continue in attack. If he is warned to rest, manager Harry Redknapp will recall Peter Crouch, who scored a hat-trick in the Carling Cup at Preston but was dropped to the bench for the Premier League game against Burnley. Redknapp has already hinted that he would consider using Crouch at Bolton and Defoe’s possible injury would give him the perfect excuse to give the striker another chance to impress. Meanwhile, Danny Rose has joined Peterborough on loan until January. The 19-year-old midfielder previously spent time on loan with Watford towards the end of last season, making seven appearances. And Swedish goalkeeper Oscar Jansson's loan at League One side Exeter has been extended until Oct 31.
