Tottenham eye Marseille midfielder Lorik Cana

Cana, the Marseille captain, has been linked with Tottenham, having alerted Arsenal to his talents earlier in his career. Manchester City and Hamburg are also monitoring six foot, one inch Cana's situation after Jose Anigo, Marseille's sporting director, said: "It's not that he's shown his desire to leave. "It's simply that it's been four years that Lorik has been here and he has the right to want to experience other things. "Today we're open to his transfer, if something happens we'll listen." Cana, 25, left Kosovo as a child, with his family, to escape the war there and, inspired by his father, Agim, who was a professional player, he joined Paris St-Germain. Cana now holds Swiss, Albanian and French passports but, when Arsenal wanted to give him a trial early in his career, he was refused a visa and remained in France. In 2005 he moved to Marseille and became captain in 2007 following the departure of Habib Beye to Newcastle. Meanwhile, Harry Redknapp's hopes of signing another Newcastle player, Sebastien Bassong, appear to have diminished following reports that the defender has pulled out of talks over wage demands. Bassong was outstanding last season despite Newcastle's relegation to the Championship and is now considering his future elsewhere following Spurs' failure to match his requirements. However, Bassong could still remain at St James' Park if the appointment of Alan Shearer as manager is confirmed soon.
