Tottenham 4 Bolton 0: Pavlyuchenko's on fire as Russian rescues Spurs

25 February 2010 21:13
His languid style has won him few favours with manager Harry Redknapp, but it's now five goals in his last three games for Roman Pavlyuchenko. Perhaps you have to be cruel to be kind.[LNB]Disillusioned with life at White Hart Lane after falling behind Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane in the pecking order, Pavlyuchenko seized the chance given to him by Keane's loan move to Celtic by scoring two rare Premier League goals in last weekend's 3-0 win at Wigan.[LNB]Last night a foot injury to Crouch gave the £13.8million strikerjust his third start of the season, and 'Super Pav' duly came up withthe goods, leaving Zat Knight for dead after 23 minutes and slottingthe ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen.[LNB]Goal machine: Pavlyuchenko now has five goals in his last three appearances[LNB]Pavlyuchenko, the player Redknapp memorably told to '****ing run around a bit', finished the scoring, too. The 28-year-old capitalised on an excellent pass from substitute Danny Rose to stroke a right-foot finish past Jaaskelainen after 88 minutes and earn Tottenham an FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham at Craven Cottage on March 6.[LNB]Jermain Defoe went off at half-time with a hamstring injury, making hima doubt for Sunday's league match against Everton, so the Russian's sudden hot streak is timely for the Spurs manager.[LNB]Redknapp said: 'Pav's a great finisher, he can score goals when opportunities come. There's every chance I'll start him on Sunday.[LNB]'He was excellent in training last week he was the best player in whatever we were doing.[LNB]'Nobody wants to see him do well more than I do. If he's scoring goals and we are winning football matches then I'm happy.'[LNB]Despite making five changes from the side who lost 3-0 at Blackburnon Sunday and opting to keep Kevin Davies on the bench, Owen Coyle'sside had a number of first-half chances before two own goals put Tottenham in a commanding position.[LNB] Super Pav: Russian (right) wheels away after breaking the deadlock[LNB]Matt Taylor forced a save from Heurelho Gomes and Ricardo Gardnerjust failed to connect with a Sam Ricketts cross at the far post, but aJaaskelainen own goal effectively ended the visitors' threat after 34minutes.[LNB]Under pressure from Defoe, the Bolton goalkeeper deflected WilsonPalacios's cross into his own net. Then, two minutes into the secondhalf, Andy O'Brien diverted the ball past Jaaskelainen after substituteEidur Gudjohnsen had set Gareth Bale free down the left.[LNB]Mustapha Riga did come close for Bolton, forcing an excellent savefrom Gomes after a fine free-kick from 24-year-old USA internationalStuart Holden on his Bolton debut.[LNB] Helping hand: The ball deflects of Jaaskelainen and into the net[LNB] [LNB]MATCH FACTSTOTTENHAM HOTSPUR (4-4-2): Gomes 6; Assou-Ekotto 6, Dawson 6, Bassong 6, Bale 7; Bentley 6 (Rose 70min, 6), Palacios 6 (Kranjcar 60min, 6), Huddlestone 6, Modric 5; Pavlyuchenko 8, Defoe 7 (Gudjohnsen 46, 6).[LNB]BOLTON WANDERERS (4-5-1): Jaaskelainen 6; Ricketts 6, O'Brien 5, Knight 5, Samuel 6; Taylor 6 (Riga 56, 6), Holden 6, Muamba 6, Cohen 5, Gardner 5 (Lee 79); Klasnic 5 (Elmander 56, 5).[LNB]Man of the match: Roman Pavlyuchenko.[LNB]Referee: Peter Walton. [LNB]Gudjohnsen also had a second-half effort disallowed for offside andforced an excellent save from Jaaskelainen, who stopped the Icelandinternational's point-blank effort with his feet after yet anotherinviting Bale cross.[LNB]For Bolton, Saturday's visit of Wolves will be more important totheir season than a potential FA Cup quarter-final, but you wouldn'thave known from Coyle's histrionics on the bench.[LNB]Coyle said: 'They scored two goals and we scored two for them, butwe created a lot of opportunities. As much as we wish Tottenham well, Idon't think 4-0 was fair.'[LNB]To add to insult to injury, Bolton's flight back up the North Westwas cancelled last night. It will be a miserable bus ride up back up tothe Reebok.[LNB]  Kranjcar: Spurs can win FA Cup and repeat greatest day of my lifeRedknapp bids to end penalty curse as Tottenham stars stay after trainingLEO'S LONDON: It's hard to show sympathy for sensitive WoodgateTOTTENHAM HOTSPUR FC
