Spurs to challenge Reds for Ings signing

Tottenham are set to rival Liverpool for the signature of Burnley striker Danny Ings with the player becoming a free agent on Monday. The striker would be available with just a training compensation fee due to Burnley of around £5m to £6m.

The 22-year-old has added further goals against both Aston Villa and Hull City in the end-season matches taking his total to 11 and underlining his value to Spurs. The club have already missed out on a couple of targets with Jay Rodriguez signing a new contract and Morgan Schneiderlin looking Arsenal bound.

The unusual transfer situation which means that Burnley would be due compensation means that Burnley will still have to offer the player a new deal in order to qualify for compensation under Premier League rules. The player has already indicated that he has no intention of signing a new deal making the process something of a formality. If the compensation cannot be agreed between the two clubs involved the matter could be decided in a tribunal.

Liverpool remain favourites to sign the player with whom they have been linked for some time and Fenway Sports Group, the clubs owners have backed a deal for the player. Spurs however feel they can still compete to win the favour of both the player and the clubs owners say reports which also link Spurs with Kieran Trippier and this could prove a boost to their bargaining position for Ings.
