Spurs should push the boat out for Forlan
TEAMtalk guest Abbi Summers believes her beloved Tottenham should push the boat out in a bid to sign star striker Diego Forlan this summer.[LNB] I must admit the thought of Diego Forlan pulling on a Tottenham shirt is getting me really excited.[LNB]The Uruguayan's agent says he wants to return to England - and I'd welcome him with open arms at White Hart Lane.[LNB]A lot of the comments on the Spurs Your Say board are quite negative towards him, which I found really surprising. I understand some fans are taking his age into consideration and I'm sure some are looking back on his time at Manchester United and thinking that his poor spell there could be repeated.[LNB]But that was a decade ago and the striker has improved dramatically since then, which he demonstrated in the World Cup. [LNB]Forlan was the outstanding player in the tournament and bagged the Golden Ball. And he is no stranger to trophies. He has picked up the UEFA Super Cup, the Primera Liga Player of the Season accolade, won the Pichichi trophy twice, won the European Golden Boot twice, was in the World Cup 2010 All Star Team, won the Europa League and also won the Premier League title with United in 2002-03. That's not too shabby if you ask me. [LNB]We all know he struggled at United, scoring just 10 times in 63 appearances after a 27-game wait for his first goal.[LNB]But after moving to Villarreal Forlan turned his form around and scored a whopping 54 times in 106 appearances.[LNB]Since moving to Atletico Madrid he has scored 74 times in 134 appearances, a record which all of Tottenham's current strikeforce would die for.[LNB]And his experience of European football could prove vital in our quest for Europa League glory.[LNB]Last season Spurs found the net just 55 times in 38 league games, and Peter Crouch has only managed a total of 12 league goals in two seasons. [LNB]It doesn't get much better with Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe either. Last season Defoe scored four goals in 22 league appearances, while Pavlyuchenko scored nine times in 29 appearances - making him our top-scoring striker![LNB]It's clear to see a new striker is desperately needed when you look at the statistics, especially when you look at our goal difference, which never reached double figures last season. [LNB]Forlan may be 32, but so is Didier Drogba who is still banging in the goals when given time on the pitch. [LNB]So I reckon Harry Redknapp should urge Daniel Levy to push the boat out and get him on board, as Forlan is still a world-class striker and deserves a chance to prove that age is just a number.
