Spurs' Shawcross link quelled

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has played down speculation linking Tottenham Hotspur with a bid for defender Ryan Shawcross. Shawcross signed permanently at the Britannia Stadium from Manchester United in January 2008 after impressing during a loan spell. The 21-year-old centre-back shone during the Potters' top-flight return last season, helping the club secure a 12th-placed finish. Shawcross' form has led to reports suggesting Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is interested in his services, but Pulis has quelled the rumours. He told The Sentinel: "No one has rung me up. I get on well with Harry and I would be very surprised if it is in the papers and he hasn't rung me first." Duo Pulis also did not rule out exits for Andy Griffin and Dave Kitson after the duo fell out of favour with the Stoke manager in the second half of last term. He added: "They are in the same situation as Michael Tonge, Leon Cort or Ibrahima Sonko. "I brought all these players to the club so there are no problems with me. We used an enormous amount of players last year to get the points we needed and will have to do exactly the same this year. "They will play a part. It is important they get their heads down and just work hard. There are no doors closed."
