Spurs' pursuit of Barcelona's David Villa intensifies

Whilst transfer talk around White Hart lane has focused on the potential departure of Gareth Bale, and the bid for Brazil’s Paulinho, the speculation surrounding David Villa has been pushed into the background. All of that may be about to change, however.

Reports in the press suggest that the club are about to despatch Technical Director Franco Baldini to hold talks with the player before the end of the week in order to progress the deal. It’s thought that Spain’s record goal-scorer is keen on a move that would give him high level exposure to prove his worth to the Spanish national team and secure his selection for next year’s World Cup. Playing and scoring for Spurs would certainly trump an extended period of sitting on Barca’s bench, as new man Neymar will doubtless be a regular starter./p>

For Tottenham, he could be the ideal short term solution to the club’s striker dilemma. With Emmanuel Adebayor apparently out of favour with manager Andre Villas-Boas, and Jermaine Defoe goal-scoring talents on the wane, someone with the pedigree of Villa could be ideal./p>

Spurs minimum requirement for the new season will be to secure the elusive goal of Champions’ League football, and the club’s tracking of Paulinho – now also apparently falling under the gaze of Real Madrid – demonstrates their commitment to spend if necessary to give their manager the tools that he requires to deliver.
