Spurs on red alert as Downing admits he will quit Middlesbrough this summer

Stewart Downing has admitted for the first time he will quit Middlesbrough this summer.[LNB]The £10million-rated England winger came close to joining Tottenham in January but the move fell through and he was forced to stay on for Boro's battle against relegation.[LNB]Don't leave: Stewart Downing[LNB]Yet, Downing has now revealed that he is already planning to leave the Riverside at the end of the season regardless of whether they survive.[LNB]'I am here until the summer so I might as well get on with it and help us stay in the league,' he said.[LNB]'Staying in this league would be the biggest one, then whoever is here next year season and whoever is not can hold their head up and say, "I did my bit". Hopefully, that will be enough for people.'[LNB]Downing's form since January has been excellent, testament not only to his feeling for the club he supported as a boy but also the importance of retaining his place in Fabio Capello's England squad.[LNB]'Not only that, it's personal pride as well,' he said. 'I have got my England place to think of and there's a World Cup next year. I need to play well at all times and that was an incentive for me.[LNB]'I am playing in front of my friends, family and home-town people, so that's another one.
