Spurs boss Redknapp turns up the heat on £14million bid for Palacios

Wilson Palacios in action for Wigan against Manchester City on Saturday Palacios favours a move to City because he would not have to relocate from his home in the north-west. That is also Wigan’s preference because they would receive more of the cash up front, although Spurs are understood to have relented in their desire to spread the£14m fee over four years and will pay the money over half that period. With Daniel Levy overseeing negotiations, Redknapp said: ‘I like Palacios and the chairman is trying to do something there.’ However, his admission that Spurs simply cannot compete with the financial might of City’s owners does not bode well. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp wants to bring Palacios to White Hart Lane ‘When City come into the equation it’s game over,’ he said, in reference to missing out on Bellamy. ‘They can outbid you and offer more money.’ Redknapp’s approach for Harper, 33, will cast fresh doubt over Heurelho Gomes’s future at Tottenham. Harper is out of contract in the summer and has been offered a new deal by Newcastle. But he looks likely to bring his 15-year career at St James’ Park to an end. A long-term deputy to Shay Given - who has also expressed a desire to leave Tyneside - he had an extended run in the team last season when the Republic of Ireland keeper was injured, but has yet to appear in the current campaign. Redknapp is also keen on Sunderland’s Kenwyne Jones and is ready to offer Darren Bent plus cash in exchange for the Trinidad and Tobago striker. But after Bent’s shocking miss late in the 1-1 draw against Portsmouth, Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia is unlikely to be convinced that the former Charlton striker is an adequate replacement. Redknapp added: ‘It was a great chance. You’re not going to get a better one to win a game. We were going home with three points, simple as that. David James had given up on it.’ Portsmouth manager Tony Adams is after some new faces of his own and is hopeful a loan deal for Liverpool’s Jermaine Pennant can still be thrashed out, despite the winger’s preference to stay at Anfield until the summer before moving on a free.   More...
