Redknapp tried to help Pompey

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has revealed he tried to find a buyer for former club Portsmouth. The Fratton Park outfit were taken over on Monday by Saudi billionaire Ali Al-Faraj after Sulaiman Al Fahim agreed to sell his 90 per cent share in the club, but there was a period when funds coming in were hard to come by. Pompey's players were delayed getting their wages paid for September but chief executive Peter Storrie managed to broker a deal to see new owners arrive on the South Coast. However, Redknapp, who was in charge at Portsmouth for five years during two separate spells, admitted he was trying to help his old club out of a tight spot. "I did speak to one or two friends I know, very wealthy guys, trying to get them to get involved because they would have been great at the club," he said. "But Peter's found another owner and hopefully this time they'll be more successful and it'll be the right people to take the club forward. "Let's hope that happens because it's got great tradition the club, it's a good club, they've got great support, hopefully one day they'll get the new stadium and push on and be a Premier League club for many years to come. "I've got a couple of friends who have been interested in buying clubs and I said to them Portsmouth would be a great club to get involved with. "It's a terrific club, great support, good fan base - get the new stadium and it's a great club to own and take forward again. "But Peter came up with an owner and he feels very confident the new people are going to be great for the club so hopefully they're the right people."
