Redknapp targets top four spot

Harry Redknapp has set his sights on UEFA Champions League qualification following the 2-1 victory over Portsmouth. Redknapp has previously played down the chances of Tottenham breaking into the top four but his hopes have been raised by the inconsistency of others. Chelsea and Liverpool both suffered defeats on Saturday, allowing Spurs to tighten their grip on third spot after nine games of the campaign. Redknapp believes it will be difficult for anyone to go on a long winning run in such a competitive division and he hopes his men can stay in touch with the leading pack. Speaking about the chase for a top-four finish, the Tottenham manager said: "We have to believe and we've got to have a go. "That is the aim and I can't keep saying we can't. This is the year the top teams are getting beaten. "Other years it's been different but Chelsea and Liverpool have been beaten this weekend. Liverpool only lost twice last year in the league. "There are teams now who, on their better days, can knock the top sides over, so I think the league is getting closer. "Aston Villa got a great result (against Chelsea) and are going to be there, Manchester City can achieve anything with that squad. We can look to push and be around that top group all season." Jermain Defoe will be suspended for Tottenham's next three games after being sent off at Fratton Park but Redknapp has other key players poised to return to the side. He added: "We've got people coming back too. Jonathan Woodgate is nearly fit now so we'll have some good options and we're in for a good season. "We've had good away results at West Ham, Hull and Portsmouth so we're going okay."
