Harry Redknapp has welcomed the news that Benoit Assou-Ekotto has been let off the hook in his bust-up with a Tottenham fan.

The supporter has withdrawn his assault allegations, after claims that Assou-Ekotto lashed out after being branded 's***' following Saturday's defeat against Wolves.

Spurs manager Redknapp told the Sun: 'I'm just glad sense has prevailed. Benoit is a gentle kid.'

The defender will meet the supporter he clashed with, who is believed to be Norwegian, to bring an 'amicable' end to the matter.

Assou-Ekotto is in the Tottenham squad for Wednesday's game against Manchester City.

A Spurs spokesman said: 'The club takes the conduct of our supporters and players and the relationship between them very seriously.

'We understand the fan has now withdrawn the complaint and that he and Benoit are due to speak this week.'

Spurs will be anxious to bounce back against City after their surprise defeat, which has left them in fifth place in the Premier League.
