Redknapp glad to end Bale's `hoodoo'

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp wants Gareth Bale to go from strength to strength after ending his Premier League hoodoo last week. Bale, the 20-year-old Wales full-back, waited more than two years for his first league win for Spurs, with Redknapp bringing him on in midfield for the final stages of the 5-0 win over Burnley at White Hart Lane. "That's why I put him on," Redknapp said. "I thought we needed to break that hoodoo. It's affected him, I think, but he played well in the Carling Cup match before. "He's a left-back really and he could be a top player." Bale has been in and out of the squad and hampered by injuries since arriving in 2007 from Southampton in a deal worth £10million. His problem now is getting ahead of Cameroon international Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the pecking order under Redknapp, who has been impressed with the improvement his first-choice left-back has shown. "We have a great left-back in Benoit Assou-Ekotto," Redknapp said. "He's a terrific payer, he's quick, he's a great passer. He whips it into feet and he has it all to be a top player."
