Redknapp excited by London 2012 football

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has urged Great Britain to seize the opportunity to compete at the 2012 Olympics in London by picking "the strongest possible team". The issue of a British team at their home Games next year remains a contentious one with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all fearful of FIFA snatching away their footballing independence should they unite with England for the tournament. While Redknapp admits he knows little about the workings of football's global governors, he is excited by the prospect of a team fighting for football gold in London. "It's coming to England and obviously we're all looking forward to it," he told BBC Sport. "I'm not sure of the actual criteria, what is needed and what you're allowed to pick, but I'd like to see us pick the strongest possible team from Great Britain. Whether we have some of the Irish lads, the Scottish lads, let's pick the best team. "It's a one-off opportunity, the Olympic Games in this country, I'd like to see us pick the best possible team and try to win the gold medal."
