Redknapp dismisses penalty shout

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insisted referee Phil Dowd was right not to award Liverpool a second penalty as his side opened the season with a 2-1 win. Opposite number Rafael Benitez was furious at the decision not to give a spot-kick when Benoit Assou-Ekotto - who scored the opening goal - barged Andriy Voronin over. Steven Gerrard had levelled with a penalty after a foul by Heurelho Gomes, but Sebastien Bassong won it for the home side. Redknapp said: "The first penalty was a nailed-on one. I have no arguments about that at all as Gomes came out and fouled Glen Johnson. "However, I did not think Liverpool's shout for a second penalty was right as Assou-Ekotto has just eased Voronin off the ball. "It is the kind of bread-and-butter stuff that defenders do week-in, week-out. The ball was also running away from Voronin."
