Redknapp backing Campbell

Harry Redknapp has defended Sol Campbell following his Notts County exit and advised other Premier League managers to consider signing him in January. Campbell created a sensational story over the summer by joining the League Two outfit on a five-year contract, but he decided to leave Meadow Lane earlier this week after making just one appearance for the club. Notts County have expressed their disappointment with Campbell but Redknapp can understand that it must have been hard for him to ply his trade in the fourth tier of English football after a career at the highest level. "Obviously they are a forward-thinking club but it is difficult when you have been a top player and you suddenly drop down all those divisions," the Tottenham manager said on Sky Sports News. "Obviously he has looked at it and thought 'what am I doing here' but to be fair to him, he's walked away from a big contract so money was not the big factor for him." Redknapp admires Campbell after working with him at Portsmouth but he has already ruled out a move for the defender due to his Tottenham history and acrimonious departure for bitter rivals Arsenal. The experienced manager insists he will not have changed his stance by January, which is the earliest Campbell will be able to join a new club due to League rules. However, he believes Campbell can still perform in the Premier League and has urged other bosses to have at look at him. "I couldn't bring Sol to Tottenham, it's impossible. All I said was that I think he can still play Premier League football somewhere," said Redknapp. "It would be a bigger problem that it would be worth (bringing Campbell to Spurs), but if a manager rang me up from another Premier League club looking for somebody, I'd say 'take him'." Redknapp stressed that he would not be offering Campbell the chance to train with Spurs in order to maintain his fitness. "No. I am sure he will keep himself fit and if a club has got any sense they will get him in now, let him train and do a deal for January," he said. "When January comes round I would recommend him to anyone."
