Rampant Reds stun Spurs to go top

Manchester United recovered from 2-0 down at half-time to return to the top of the Premier League after a remarkable 5-2 win over Tottenham. The visitors stunned the Old Trafford crowd on Saturday evening with two goals in three first-half minutes, Darren Bent first lashing home just before the half-hour mark before Luka Modric punished more slack United defending by firing Spurs' second three minutes later. However, a stunning turnaround involving five goals in 22 second-half minutes began soon after the interval when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a highly debatable penalty, before two goals from Wayne Rooney, another from Ronaldo and one from Dimitar Berbatov earned United a precious and remarkable win.Bent had the first opportunity of the game when his header from Aaron Lennon's right-wing cross was fumbled wide of his near post by Edwin van der Sar in the seventh minute.United failed to heed their warning and Tottenham's goals when they came both arrived via crosses from the right.Rio Ferdinand failed to deal with Lennon's centre and Bent was on hand to lash home from close range in the 29th minute to put Harry Redknapp's side in front.Spurs doubled their lead only three minutes later when Vedran Corluka's centre found Modric at the far post. The Croatian chested the ball down before firing home left-footed, much to the amazement of the vast majority of the Old Trafford crowd.Sir Alex Ferguson threw on Carlos Tevez at half-time for the ineffective Nani and his side dragged themselves back into the game 12 minutes after the break in controversial circumstances.Heurelho Gomes darted off his line as Michael Carrick ran through, and the Brazilian goalkeeper reacted superbly to touch the ball to safety. Referee Howard Webb thought otherwise however and awarded a penalty, which Ronaldo coolly converted.United smelt blood and had their leveller on 67 minutes. Tevez and Berbatov combined to send Rooney racing away down the right. The England striker steadied himself before firing home, between the legs of a defender and inside Gomes' near-post.Rooney then turned provider a minute later when his superb cross from the right picked out Ronaldo, whose diving header from close range flashed past Gomes to spark scenes of jubilation from the home crowd. The roles were reversed two minutes later when United added their fourth. Ronaldo dug out a cross from the right that Rooney controlled before side-footing home, despite the best efforts of Jonathan Woodgate on the line. The cherry on the icing on top of the cake came when Berbatov notched against his former team, scrambling the ball over the line after Gomes had saved his initial header to silence the boos from the visiting fans.United return to the summit of the Premier League having been unseated earlier in the day by Liverpool, but the Red Devils are again three points clear of Rafael Benitez's side, with a game in hand.[LNB]
