Preston v Spurs preview

23 September 2009 10:41
Tottenham have a defensive injury crisis to contend with ahead of their Carling Cup trip to Preston. Last season's losing finalists are missing centre-backs Ledley King, Jonathan Woodgate and Sebastien Bassong for the third-round tie. King and Bassong picked up injuries in last weekend's defeat to Chelsea, while Woodgate suffered a setback in his recovery from a groin problem. However, Harry Redknapp has been handed a boost with the news Michael Dawson is back in the squad after an Achilles injury. Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko misses out again with an Achilles problem, while midfielder Niko Kranjcar is cup-tied having featured for Portsmouth earlier in the competition. Out-of-favour duo Giovani dos Santos and David Bentley will get a rare chance to impress as they are set to be handed starting roles. Preston will have to make do without on-loan defender Neill Collins as he is cup-tied having played for Wolves in the last round. Youl Mawene looks set to be drafted back into the starting line-up alongside Liam Chilvers. Full-back Callum Davidson is ruled out for several weeks with a torn hamstring and midfielder Barry Nicholson remains a long-term absentee with a broken leg. Winger Paul Parry also tore a hamstring in the recent 2-0 home win over Swansea and misses out for Alan Irvine's men Neil Mellor is set to start despite suffering cramp in last Saturday's victory over Coventry.
