Portsmouth make triple signing on deadline day
The Premier League's bottom club Portsmouth were the biggest wheeler-dealers as England's transfer window closed on Tuesday, signing three players and selling Niko Kranjcar to Tottenham Hotspur.
Portsmouth brought in Israeli defender Tal Ben-Haim from Manchester City, French midfielder Hassan Yebda from Benfica and defender Mike Williamson from Watford.
Croatian midfielder Kranjcar became the fourth Pompey player this year to join former boss Harry Redknapp at Spurs.
Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie also confirmed that forward David Nugent had joined Burnley on loan but England goalkeeper David James will be staying at Fratton Park.
"There was some talk of him joining Tottenham, but nothing happened and there was no other offers for him so he is staying," Storrie told Sky Sports News.
The day's biggest deal was the transfer of Dutch international defender John Heitinga from Atletico Madrid to Everton for around 6 million pounds.
Aston Villa bought Welsh international defender James Collins from West Ham United and defender Richard Dunne moved to Villa Park after nine years with Manchester City.
Wales defender Danny Collins moved from Sunderland to Stoke City and Grant Leadbitter, Carlos Edwards and Teemu Tainio also left Sunderland.
Leadbitter and Edwards rejoined former Sunderland boss Roy Keane at Ipswich Town in the Championship (second division) for a combined fee of 3.95 million pounds and Finland international Tainio joined Birmingham City on loan until the end of the season.
Hull City were also busy, signing Ibrahima Sonko from Stoke and Abdoulaye Meite from West Bromwich Albion.
Bolton Wanderers, who like Portsmouth have yet to gain a league point, signed Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic on loan from Nantes.
Wolverhampton Wanderers bought Austria striker Stefan Maierhofer for an undisclosed fee from Rapid Vienna, their ninth signing since winning promotion to the Premier League.
BUSIEST CLUB
Portsmouth's new owner Sulaiman Al-Fahim, who took control last Thursday, and manager Paul Hart have wasted little time in bolstering their squad, with Ben-Haim and Yebda joining a quartet of players who signed on Friday.
Spurs signed Kranjcar as a replacement for his compatriot Luka Modric who has broken a bone in his fibula and is likely to be sidelined for at least six weeks.
Fulham announced after the deadline passed that they had signed 26-year-old striker David Elm from Kalmar in Sweden.
Other deals may be announced later on Tuesday depending on whether late paperwork is authorised by the league and FA.
