Player of the day: Gareth Bale

16 July 2012 09:58

Today’s Player of the day is Tottenham and Welsh winger Gareth Bale. Bale began his career at Southampton, playing at left back and earning acclaim as a free kick specialist.

Since transferring to Spurs in 2007, managerial and tactical shifts have seen him transform into a more offensively oriented player. Bale’s recent performances have been integral to both Tottenham’s domestic success and in the Champions League.

Bale’s Spurs career really took off at the end of the 2009-10 season. Bale was instrumental in helping Tottenham qualify for the champions league and was rewarded for his individual efforts with the Player of the Month award in April. During the 2010-11 season Bale enjoyed a fine run of form most notably scoring his first senior hat trick against the then European Champions Inter Milan at the San Siro. Gareth Bale received the PFA Player of the Year Award at the end of the 2010-11 season and despite rumours linking him with the likes of FC Barcelona and Chelsea, Bale decided to stay on at White Hart Lane.

Bale continued to impress during the 2011-12 season with Tottenham and helped his team finish fourth in the Premier League, however this did not amount to Champions League qualification due to Chelsea’s European success. Again rumours linking Bale away from the north London club were quashed when the Welsh international signed a new four year contract, committing his future to the club until 2016.

Bale has made 113 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 21 goals.

Bale made his international debut on 27th May 2006 coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 win against Trinidad and Tobago, making him the youngest player to ever play for Wales. Many have compared Bale’s technical ability to that of Welsh legend Ryan Giggs which have also seen him awarded several individual awards for his performances in a Wales Shirt.

Bale has made 33 appearances for his country, scoring 6 goals.
