Pavlyuchenko leaves Tottenham for Russia to save his World Cup dream

Roman Pavlyuchenko has flown to Moscow for talks with his agent after growing increasingly convinced that he must leave Tottenham Hotspur to save his international career. The Russia striker's only start of the season came against Doncaster in the Carling Cup and he has had to watch from the sidelines as Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch have notched 17 goals between them. An Achilles injury suffered a fortnight ago has made the situation worse, but despite returning to training on Monday, Pavlyuchenko has been told he will not line up at Bolton on Saturday and has instead flown to Moscow to link up early with Guus Hiddink's national team. Spurs manager Harry Redknapp insisted the 30-cap international was still in his plans when a return to Russia was mooted in August, but the 27-year-old is wary his hopes of playing at next summer's World Cup are in doubt. 'I won't travel with the (Spurs) team, so already I can go to Moscow,' he said. 'I've trained in the last few days at maximum level and understand that what lies ahead for Russia are the biggest matches of the year - against Germany and Azerbaijan. 'As for my situation at the club, I can only say one thing: if I don't get more match practice then, in the winter, it is most likely that I will have to search for a new club.' Russia lie one point behind Germany in their World Cup qualification group with the two teams set to meet at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium next Saturday. Former Chelsea boss Hiddink admits he is facing a dilemma over whether to pick Pavlyuchenko, who is the country's highest scorer in qualification with five goals. 'I've said many times that I worry about his position in the (Spurs) team,' said Hiddink. 'But on the other hand you can't forget Roman's qualities. 'We need to see how he looks in training, his physical state and compare him to the other players in his position. 'It's not definite that Pavlyuchenko will be among the 18 players named for the match against Germany. 'Roman doesn't have constant match practice, but he consistently creates two or three chance in a match which can be converted into goals. That is impossible to ignore.' Pavlyuchenko will discuss his future with agent Oleg Artemov. Zenit St Petersburg and his former club Spartak Moscow maintain an interest, but would be reluctant to pay more than £10million for a player that Spurs signed for £13.8m before the start of last season.
