I have no idea how far the chairman has got with it or even whether Sunderland want to do a deal.' They may tempt their relegation rivals with an offer of up to£12m - compared to the£7m which it is believed Jones would cost in the event of his current club going down. Sunderland's minds will also have been focused by Aston Villa's signing of Emile Heskey. Tottenham's Jermain Defoe Martin O'Neill had also shown keen interest in Jones but opted for his former Leicester charge, leaving Tottenham as the only team with the money to match their ambition in the market. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already sanctioned a January spending spree second only to Manchester City's hit-and-miss trolley dash. Jermain Defoe cost£15m from Portsmouth, although only£3.5m changed hands because of other deals between the two clubs. Harry Redknapp has also been allowed to lavish£14m on signing Wigan's Wilson Palacios in a bid to climb away from the relegation zone. Jones' arrival, either this month or in the summer, would confirm the end of Darren Bent's chances at White Hart Lane. Redknapp publicly criticised Bent after his awful miss against Portsmouth last weekend and Jones would also provide an alternative to£20m summer signing Roman Pavlyuchenko, who has been inconsistent since his transfer to White Hart Lane.
