Manchester City in playerpluscash talks to sign David Bentley from Tottenham

Talks over the deal for Petrov have been on going for some time, but according to the MIrror, Mark Hughes is eager to extend the deal in order to make Bentley the latest addition to his new look side. The 25-year-old, who only arrived at White Hart Lane 12 months ago for £15 million, has struggled to win a regular starting place under Harry Redknapp and if a deal is done, Tottenham are likely to ask full the full amount they paid last summer. City are leading the race to sign Bentley as the close of the summer transfer window approaches. Everton, Aston Villa and Sunderland are thought to have approached Tottenham about the availability of their winger, but having played under Hughes previously at Blackburn, Bentley could well go with familiarity. A move to the Eastlands could also provide Bentley with the chance he needs to win back his place in Fabio Capello's England squad ahead of next year's World Cup in South Africa. The possibility of the deal going ahead gathered further pace yesterday when Petrov - who is valued at around £5 million - withdrew himself from the Bulgaria squad in order to discuss the move.
