Injury-hit Spurs eye £8m Sunderland's Anton Ferdinand to patch up defence

Harry Redknapp is considering a January move for Anton Ferdinand as concerns grow over his injury-stricken Tottenham Hotspur defence. The White Hart Lane boss had a look at the Sunderland defender in the summer before moving for Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong. But Redknapp is still finding himself short of options at the back following injuries to Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Bassong already this season. Woodgate (groin) and Dawson (achilles) are thought to be closing in on a return, while Bassong has been told a head injury he picked up against Chelsea is not serious. But King has ongoing knee problems and know faces a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Former West Ham defender Ferdinand, 24, is very interested in a return to London to work with Redknapp, who nurtured his brother Rio at Upton Park, according to the Daily Mirror. The paper says Sunderland are willing to do business if they can recoup the £8million they paid the Hammers in August 2008.
