Hull City 1 Tottenham 5: Deadly Defoe hits treble top to leave Harry drooling

Phil Brown has had better days. After hearing that seven weeks of hard work had gone up in smoke after the collapse of Alvaro Negredo's £12million move from Real Madrid, the Hull boss watched his team taken apart by three goal striker Jermain Defoe.[LNB] To make matter worse, Brown's player of last season, the England hopeful Michael Turner, chose this game against the club he supported as a boy to make two dreadful errors which gifted the visitors a couple of goals.[LNB] Quick off the marK: Jermaine Defoe celebrates firing Spurs into an early lead[LNB] Spurs marched to the top of the table, Defoe drilling one shot with his left foot past Turner and keeper Bo Myhill to open the scoring and then lashing his second into the top corner after Turner had misread a through ball from Alan Hutton.[LNB] After Wilson Palacios had scored Tottenham's second of the night from another swift counter attack on 14 minutes, Hull briefly fought back. But Stephen Hunt's long-range free-kick was a rare moment of joy for Brown, whose team have now won just one of their last 23 League games.[LNB] Hull's start could have been even worse. Robbie Keane sidefooted into an empty net after two minutes, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside against Aaron Lennon, who had supplied the right-wing cross.[LNB] The visitors finally turned their pressure into a goal after George Boateng gifted them possession inside his own half.[LNB] The midfielder had taken the ball away from Luka Modric quite tidily but played a weak pass into the path of Tom Huddlestone. The midfielder found Defoe to his left and the striker needed just one touch to wrong-foot Turner and a second to stroke a low shot across Myhill and into the corner.[LNB] Sharp shooter: Jermain Defoe fires past Dawson to open the scoring[LNB] Four minutes later, Tottenham were 2-0 up, but only after Heurelho Gomes had given Hunt a glimpse of a chance with a weak punch - and twisted his ankle in the process, leading to Carlo Cudcini's early introduction.[LNB]Spurs moved swiftly on to the counter attack while Gomes shouted to the bench for treatment. Defoe beat three static Hull men and found Keane in an advanced position. The Ireland captain played the ball into the area for Palacios, who planted a left-foot shot into Myhill's net.[LNB] After Modric had been allowed the freedom of East Yorkshire to fire a long-range shot into Myhill's chest, Brown decided to act, sparing no thought for ineffective striker Daniel Cousin, who had barely touched the ball.[LNB] In Cousin's place, Brown sent on playmaker Geovanni. The 22ndminute substitution certainly upset Cousin, who refused to shake his manager's hand as he left the pitch and had to be restrained by assistant Steve Parkin to stop him storming down the tunnel.[LNB] Geovanni, scorer of last season's winner at White Hart Lane, made an immediate impact, setting up a chance for new signing Hunt which the Irish winger should have put on target. [LNB]Caleb Folan certainly expected at least a cross from his team-mate. Geovanni then played a part in Hull's goal, although whether he got a touch to Hunt's free-kick from the touchline was debatable. Both players celebrated as the ball bounced high, close to Geovanni's forehead and beyond Cudicini, who had hardly touched the ball before having to pick it out of his net.[LNB] No chance: Cudicini is beaten by Hunt's free kick [LNB] Hull then attempted a fightback, Hutton denying Hunt with a superb tackle in the box and Folan scoring what appeared to be a perfectly good goal from the edge of the area after wrestling for the ball with Vedran Corluka. To the chagrin of Brown and the home support, referee Chris Foy decided the striker's challenge was illegal.[LNB] Hull had warnings at the other end too and after Hutton had been denied a penalty for handball against Gardner, and Defoe had screwed a shot wide from another Lennon centre, the Spurs No 18 grabbed his second of the night with an emphatic finish. [LNB]Turner was deceived by Keane's clever dummy and Gardner's slip in front of him, allowing Defoe to pounce with a ruthless finish into the near top corner.[LNB] The chances continued to fall to Spurs in the second half and Turner's uncomfortable night continued when he was flummoxed by a piece of magic from Keane, which resulted in another blocked shot from the Spurs striker. The defender was then booked for a nasty tackle on Modric.[LNB] Hull thought they had a lifeline when Geovanni fell under Sebastien Bassong's heavy challenge and they appealed confidently for a penalty, but referee Foy was unmoved.[LNB] Spurs scored again on 78 minutes after Keane broke from his own half and released Lennon, whose cross looped over Myhill via Keane's head.[LNB] Defoe wrapped up the win and completed his hat-trick with a last-minute drive from 18 yards after a one-two with Lennon.
