HATCHET MAN: Redknapp might have to sell Spurs skipper Keane again to cater for van Nistelrooy &

Harry Redknapp looks like he is heading for a major headache with Robbie Keane as Tottenham reshape their squad this summer. The manager is ready to wheel and deal to get Spurs into a position to compete near the top of the Premier League but what role the captain will play is becoming increasingly hazy. If there is one signing Redknapp will make before the end of August it will be a target man. Kenwyne Jones was on his wanted list and the possibility of signing Ruud van Nistelrooy is being investigated. John Carew has also been mentioned in dispatches and others are no doubt being considered as Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko have failed to convince at White Hart Lane. Redknapp's admiration for Jermain Defoe is clear, so he is safe, but if the England poacher is paired with a big front man, where will that leave Keane? Brought back after his failed short spell at Liverpool and given the captaincy immediately, it is hard to see how Spurs could accommodate him, Defoe and a new signing of the style Redknapp is pursuing. Neither Defoe nor Keane are likely wide players and a wingless front three would leave Spurs' attacking approach very restricted. It would also mean the improving Aaron Lennon being squeezed out, which seems highly unlikely. So what does Harry do with Keane? Leaving his captain on the sidelines would lead to all sorts of trouble given Keane's need for regular games. Rotation could mean both him and Defoe are frustrated and the only option beyond that would be to sell, which presumably the player and certainly the fans would be upset about. Redknapp, no doubt, has a cunning plan, but he may have to cash in the popularity chips from his successful start at Spurs to execute it.
