HATCHET MAN: Harry's bargain-hunting spells serious trouble for Tottenham

Tottenham's transfer policy this summer becomes curiouser and curiouser. Hot on the heals of a desperate bid for the slow, has-been Patrick Vieira - long ago discarded by Arsenal as past it - they have so far failed to make a significant signing and seem intent on holding on to Darren Bent. What other reason can there be for Spurs refusing to budge on their £16.5 million valuation of the striker manager Harry Redknapp rated last season as a worse finisher than his wife Sandra? It has been obvious for a long time that Bent's days at White Hart Lane are numbered. His stats aren't too bad - a goalscoring ratio of nearly one in three in the Premier League - despite many of his appearances coming from the bench. Klass act: Huntelaar would be perfect foil for Defoe But he has looked like he lacks confidence from the start and just has never really fitted the bill. Redknapp wants a big man now to play alongside Jermain Defoe but if the club want money to spend from Bent's sale they are going to have to drop their price. None of the big clubs are going to come in for a Tottenham reserve and when Sunderland are frightened off by the price it cannot get much more obvious that Spurs are trying it on. Apparently, it is a similar situation with Real Madrid's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and the club will have to up their offer and improve their payment terms if they are serious about  signing the Dutch striker. Bargain-hunting like they are spells trouble and Spurs need to get serious now before it is too late. Last summer they took their time as they negotiated harder than most in buying and selling...and look where it got them.
