HATCHET MAN: Business as usual at White Hart Lane as senseless Spurs splash the cash

02 February 2009 12:23
When Daniel Levy comes to justify his transfer window spending it should be interesting. [LNB]No doubt he will claim that Tottenham's[LNB]frenetic activity was based on necessity and carried out calmly with measured judgement after due diligence. [LNB]But as things stand it appears to have been panic-driven, chaotic and extravagant.   [LNB] [LNB]Reunited: Keane (left) and Defoe could be playing together again[LNB]Only Manchester City had spent more money than Spurs as the final day of the   month-long window began and with four confirmed signings and Robbie Keane's   pending there have been more additions than many clubs make in an entire   summer. [LNB]   More from Hatchet Man... HATCHET MAN: Faubert to Real Madrid can't be a very Wise move for the Spanish giants[LNB]02/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Relegate referee Riley after his Anfield nightmare[LNB]02/02/09 HATCHET MAN: If Pompey pick Avram you can take it for Granted they are going down[LNB]02/02/09 HATCHET MAN: Oh dear! Birmingham new recruit Costly is the transfer window's poster boy[LNB]30/01/09 HATCHET MAN: Officials are getting ref justice as long as the FA reverse their decisions[LNB]30/01/09 HATCHET MAN: Trouble on Tyneside as Joe Kinnear's foot in mouth disease turns into a nightmare[LNB]30/01/09 HATCHET MAN: United 1 Arsenal 0: Red Devils are still laughing at ditching French flop Silvestre[LNB]30/01/09 HATCHET MAN: Tough-talking Sbragia has turned out to be Sunderland's soft touch[LNB]30/01/09 VIEW FULL ARCHIVE[LNB]  And don't overlook what chairman Levy told fans in an open letter last October after the departure of manager Juande Ramos.[LNB]He said: 'Harry Redknapp will be working with a squad of quality internationals. We must not forget that this team, without the benefit of Roman Pavlyuchenko, Vedran Corluka and Fraizer Campbell, gave a more than creditable performance against the League leaders [a draw with Chelsea, who looked more likely title contenders then than they do now].' [LNB]Even though Levy has not signed bad players in the window (if you can ignore Pascal Chimbonda's highly questionable attitude) the logic in the business he has done is questionable. [LNB]Their squad will look stronger and may bring some optimism, but it was a similar situation in the summer and that hasn't panned out too well. [LNB]Frightened by the persistent prospect of relegation, Spurs have tried sacking their manager and it has not solved the problem immediately so they have thrown money at the squad. [LNB]Total spending looked set to get close to £50 million on Monday morning and even if there is a profit made on Keane, it will have been more than made up for by losses elsewhere. [LNB]Signing three players who only left Tottenham in the last year shows a lack of overall direction and planning.[LNB] And the cost comes in getting back Jermain Defoe for a much larger fee, in levies and agents fees. [LNB]Re-signing Keane may excite the fans but failing at 'his favourite boyhood club' makes him damaged goods short-term and he is not fit as a partner for Defoe in the long-term. [LNB]Spurs' new boys, Wilson Palacios and Carlo Cudicini, look like decent signings but the rest of the business, like the ridiculously flexible Premier League rules which have been bent for each returning player, makes very little sense.[LNB] ROBBIE RETURNS!
