Harry Redknapp lashes out: 'Police should lay off Jermain Defoe'

Harry Redknapp has sensationally hit out at the police, claiming harassment of his England striker Jermain Defoe. Redknapp has no problem with Defoe facing the hate mob at his old club West Ham tomorrow, after the front man once ill-advisedly demanded a transfer on the day the Hammers were relegated. But the Spurs boss feels his star player, who fired a hat-trick in the 5-1 win at Hull, has not been treated fairly by police. 'The kid is driving a big car,' said Redknapp. 'Why shouldn't he drive a big car? He's a black kid. So what? You wonder why he keeps getting stopped. What's the game. What's he done wrong? Nothing, has he? 'I don't know why they keep stopping him. Anyone can own a big car in this world, if they've worked for it. 'You don't have to have a shirt and tie on and work in the City to have a nice car. 'Does he think he's victimised? I think he probably does, yes. 'I don't want to get involved in the race thing but you do wonder why they are stopping the kid. Why shouldn't he have a nice car, white or black lad? Good luck to them.' Defoe, who drives a black Ferrari Cabriolet, was angered when he was arrested and put in a cell, accused of driving while disqualified. He was released when police discovered the sentence had been suspended. But the 26-year-old hit the roof last weekend when he was stopped again, while on a visit to his mother, and he is contemplating suing the police.
