Gareth Bale fires Tottenham to victory

Gareth Bale inspired Tottenham to a two one victory over Newcastle United in today’s lunchtime fixture at White Hart Lane.

Spurs took just 5 minutes to open the scoring against the magpies, with Bale firing in a trademark free kick past goalkeeper Tim Krul. Newcastle pulled level just before the half hour mark, with January signing from Bordeaux, Yoan Gouffran’s shot going past Hugo Lloris with a slight deflection.

Tottenham controlled large periods of the second half, and went ahead again with Gareth Bale running on to a through ball and firing home for his 4th goal in 3 league games. The Welshman could have had three more late on in the second half, with a number of chances to secure his hat-trick, but Newcastle offered little in attack in the second half and Tottenham held on to secure another vital victory in their quest for Champions League football.

This time last year, Tottenham sat 3rd in the league, with today’s victory keeping the North London club in 4th position, proving manager Andre Villas Boas is keeping up the standard at White Hart Lane so far this season. Should spurs continue this excellent run of form, the White Hart Lane faithful will soon be singing the name of the former Porto and Chelsea boss.

However, today’s game was all about midfield man Gareth Bale, who at times looked completely untouchable, and showed once again exactly why he is been watched by an array of Europe’s top clubs. Alan Pardew’s team now look ahead to their next league fixture at home to fellow strugglers Southampton, and will go in to the game knowing only a victory will do as they look to secure there Premier League status.
