Fulham 1 Tottenham 2: Hughes fury as Huddlestone controversially ends unbeaten run

16 October 2010 20:55
Tottenham head to Milan with the confidence of a win behind them but they needed to come from behind yet again - and also required the open-mindedness of a referee. [LNB]Roman Pavlyuchenko had scored to wipeout Diomansy Kamara's opener for Fulham before Tom Huddlestone drove home what proved to be the winning Spurs goal. [LNB]At first disallowing it for William Gallas being offside, referee Mike Dean changed his mind after consulting an assistant. [LNB] London pride: Tom Huddlestone gave Spurs the lead with a thunderous drive from a corner[LNB]Fulham were incensed - as incensed asthey get beside the Thames - as their unbeaten record fell. [LNB][LNB]MATCH FACTS Fulham (4-4-2): Schwarzer; Baird, Hughes, Hangeland, Salcido; Davies, Greening (E Johnson 84), Murphy (Kelly 52), Dempsey; Dembele (Gera 75), Kamara. [LNB]Subs (not used): Stockdale, Pantsil, Riise, Halliche. Booked: Dempsey. [LNB]Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Gomes; Hutton, Gallas, King (Bassong 44), Assou-Ekotto; Sandro (Lennon 46), Huddlestone; Modric, Van der Vaart, Bale; Pavlyuchenko (Crouch 70). [LNB]Subs (not used): Cudicini, Jenas, Keane, Kranjcar. Booked: Sandro. [LNB]Referee: M Dean (Wirral) [LNB]Spurs were relieved to have made another three-point escape after trailing as they have done against Wolves and Aston Villa. [LNB]Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp sentout a strong, attacking side despite Wednesday's trip to Italy for the attractive Champions League match against Internazionale. [LNB]Determined to make an impact - and succeeding - with suspension keeping him out in midweek, Rafael van der Vaart was again tucked in just behind lead striker Pavlyuchenko. [LNB]The Russian might have given Spurs anearly lead after being found by Gareth Bale's volleyed cross, but he dragged his shot across goal and just wide, having chested the ball downneatly. [LNB]You expected that to signal a spell of Tottenham dominance but, instead, Fulham got their act together. [LNB]Their solid frame of four across midfield, with Jonathan Greening and Danny Murphy at its centre, weaved paths to goal with so many Spurs players so frequently committed forward. And Fulham were happy to have Moussa Dembele back up front after injury.[LNB] Russian to it: Roman Pavlyuchenko (second left) pounced after Rafael van der Vaart's (second right) chip hit the bar [LNB]Tottenham also looked vulnerable to the high ball, fortunate not to fall behind when Kamara headed Simon Davies's corner wide before Aaron Hughes nodded Murphy's cross just overthe bar. [LNB]StatAttackThree of Tom Huddlestone's seven Premier League goals have come against Fulham.[LNB][LNB]Then came the goal Fulham deserved. Davies clipped a ball forward in the penalty area and Clint Dempsey controlled it well before turning in a low cross to set up a simple tap-in for Kamara, who had escaped Gallas. [LNB]The lead lasted just 57 seconds, however, another piece of van der Vaart ingenuity producing an equaliser. [LNB]Bale crossed and the Dutchman chippeddelicately over Mark Schwarzer and on to the crossbar, the ball dropping kindly for Pavlyuchenko to touch home his fifth goal of the season.[LNB] [LNB] A goal to the good: Fulham took the lead through Diomansy Kamara[LNB] But Heurelho Gomes then saved one-handed from Kamara and Spurs were fortunate to get into the break onlevel terms, though they lost Ledley King with a groin injury just before. Redknapp reorganised and off went holding player Sandro to be replaced by Aaron Lennon, giving more width and balance. [LNB]It almost brought immediate reward when Lennon's looping cross found van der Vaart and his volley forced Schwarzer to save with his feet. [LNB]Again you expected Spurs to push on, the more so when Murphy hobbled off. But dogged Fulham responded with a Chris Baird header which Gomes tipped over following a corner.[LNB] Then came the drama. Bale's corner reached Huddlestone and his drilled shot from 25 yards flashed into the corner of the Fulham net past Schwarzer's outstretched right hand. [LNB] Fair challenge: Danny Murphy tackles Van der Vaart[LNB] [LNB]Referee Dean looked to have disallowed the goal as assistant Martin Yerby raised his flag for Gallas being offside but, prevailed upon by the Spurs players, he spoke to the linesman and awarded the goal. Fulham never got over their sense of injustice after that. Tottenham cared little.
