Former Tottenham coach Martin Jol shocked as Jermain Defoe stakes England claim

Look back over the last six years, he could never score that goal.'[LNB]'He always had the pace to get in behind and on to the ball over the top. But it was the same story. One touch and then bang. He always shot as soon as he could, rather than trying to take it on. [LNB]"That was the first time I can remember when I've seen him take the ball on a bit and choose the right moment to shoot. He did it very well, too, a good goal. Maybe he is growing up as a player.'[LNB]Defoe won his 35th England cap in Holland, though has rarely been considered a first team regular. Seven goals in nine games under Capello, however, might suggest his international fortunes are turning. [LNB]Capello said: 'Defoe is a good player. He shoots with his left and right. He is very fast and his movement without the ball is good. He is dangerous.'[LNB]His performance in Amsterdam if followed up by a strong season for Tottenham should keep Michael Owen at arms length and leave Defoe as the likely first substitute for the World Cup finals in South Africa. [LNB]Though the player himself is taking little for granted. [LNB]'It's up to the manager,' said Defoe. 'I've always said I just want to keep myself in the frame and, if it means coming on and trying to make an impact, then I'll do that. [LNB]'Everyone wants to start games and everyone's doing their part. The manager's shown faith in a lot of the boys. I had 45 minutes and I'm happy with that. It's just nice to get out there and play for your country.'[LNB]
