Fergie: Rooney's season could be done

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson hinted Wayne Rooney's season could be over after he saw his side secure a 3-1 win over Tottenham.[LNB] Nani's late chip and Ryan Giggs' second penalty sealed a result that was all the more impressive considering the absence of injured top scorer Rooney.[LNB]The England striker watched on from the stands due to a groin injury which Ferguson said could keep him out for the rest of the campaign.[LNB]"I think he'll probably take two to three weeks to recover," Ferguson told Sky Sports 1. "We'll try to get him back, he'll obviously be desperate to get back himself. We'll just have to wait and see."[LNB]Ferguson pinpointed his side's ability to hold their nerve under pressure as key to a win that moved them two points clear of Chelsea.[LNB]United looked in danger of being held after Ledley King's header had cancelled out Giggs' first penalty.[LNB]But a clever finish from Nani with 10 minutes left moved them ahead before the Portuguese won a late penalty which Giggs converted.[LNB]"We played well, that was important, but most important was we kept our nerve," Ferguson added. "We had no signs of nerves, which is great at this time of season - that's a great quality to have."[LNB]Spurs had beaten Arsenal and Chelsea in their previous two matches, but boss Harry Redknapp lamented some poor defending as they failed to reproduce a performance to match those results.[LNB]"We didn't play as well as we have," he said. "Even then with 10 minutes to go you are thinking about taking a point away from Old Trafford. But we gave away two sloppy penalties today.[LNB]"We didn't defend well enough and it cost us in the end."[LNB]Defeat could also see Spurs lose fourth place before the end of the day with Manchester City, who are two points behind, travelling to Arsenal in today's late kick-off.[LNB]"It's all to play for still," Redknapp added. "It's going be tight, it will go down to the last game I suppose.[LNB]"We've just got to keep going. We have Bolton at home next week which won't be easy.[LNB]"Then we play Manchester City and Burnley and we need to pick up points from those games."
