FC Basel v Tottenham Europa League Match Preview, Line-Up's and Prediction

11 April 2013 16:13

Tottenham will be without the injured trio of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and William Gallas as they aim to reach the Europa League semi-finals.

Andre Villas-Boas believes striker Emmanuel Adebayor could be the key.

The Spurs boss said: "He has got back in the goals in our recent games and he has shown how influential he can be."

Adebayor scored in the first leg at White Hart Lane and was on target after just 33 seconds in Sunday's 2-2 draw with Everton.

"Finding the back of the net allows him to go into the game with more confidence and I always think it's self-belief from the player, rather than anything else, that helps them improve," added Villas-Boas.

"His link-up play has improved tremendously. He's been much more involved in the build of play and assisted and created so much, allowing others to flourish."

Assistant coach Steffen Freund thinks his team can cope without their injured trio.

"We're playing a strong team... but we are confident because we've played so well away all season," he said.

"If we perform how we know we can, we have a good chance of progressing to the semi-finals."

Tottenham have lost only once in the Europa League this season - a 4-1 defeat by Inter Milan in the round of 16 - but still advanced on away goals and they beat Lyon in the previous round thanks to Mousa Dembele's last-minute goal in France.

Freund added: "We've played 11 matches in this competition and we've been strong throughout. Okay, Inter Milan was difficult, but we managed to come back at Lyon in the last minute.

"Now it's the same against Basel. Maybe we can score in the last minute again! We certainly have the desire and determination to do it."

Andre Villas-Boas has a very long injury list to deal with at the moment. If the result at home to Basel wasn’t bad enough, that match also saw William Gallas and Aaron Lennon being added to that injury list. Tottenham currently have six first team players out with injury — Sandro, Kaboul, Bale, Gallas, Lennon and Defoe.

FC Basel Probable Starting Line-Up (4-2-3-1) – Sommer (GK); Steinhofer, Schar, Dragovic, Joo-Ho; Diaz, Elneny; Stocker, Frei, Salah; Streller.

Tottenham Hotspur Probable Starting-Lineup (4-2-3-1) – Friedel (GK); Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto; Parker, Dembele; Dempsey, Holtby, Sigurdsson; Adebayor.

Match Prediction: Basel 2 – 1 Tottenham Basel will be too strong at home for Spurs to turn this tie around. The Swiss champions have an excellent defensive record at St. Jakob-Park, and given that Tottenham are missing so many key players through injury, it will be hard for them to cause any real trouble to Basel without exposing their defence to counter-attack.
